Mudgee brewing Co
Like many good things, the Mudgee Brewing Company began with an idea shared with mates over a few beers. From that moment, Gary Leonard began exploring the vast world of craft beers and discovered beer making traditions with heritages going back hundreds of years.
He enjoyed the differences in beer, between an ale and a stout, a porter and a lager. With the revolution of craft brewing in New Zealand well underway, he decided that Mudgee was a perfect place to start a microbrewery which placed Mudgee Brewing Company at the fore-front of the craft beer renaissance in Australia.
Mudgee has a fine history of brewing with Crossings Brewery being first to set up in 1853 and the Federal Brewery founded in 1883. Sadly, its doors shut in1956. During its time its beer was in high demand in Sydney and Melbourne and exported to the thirsty Australian troops fighting in the Pacific Islands during World War Two.
The Federal Brewery was also responsible for the legend of Mudgee Mud, which has inspired Mudgee Brewery's signature Imperial Stout. For years they used the pristine waters from a farmer's well, but when the town water was connected the quality went down. For a while there was so much sediment in the beer, it became known as Mudgee Mud.
Some 60 years later the legend (but fortunately not the taste) of Mudgee Mud has been resurrected by the Mudgee Brewery. The brewing takes place in a rustic 100-year old red brick former wool store owned by the Anglican Church, though the local Catholic priest has blessed the brewery too. And why wouldn't you bless a place that produces fine, crafted beers ranging from sessionable pale ales to the rich taste of Mudgee Mud?

Putta Bucca Wetlands
The "Putta Bucca Wetlands" is a public reserve, managed by Mid-Western Regional Council in Mudgee, central Western New South Wales, Australia. The name Putta Bucca is an aboriginal word thought to come from the Wiradjuri language, puttaba meaning ''a hill near a creek'' and bugga meaning ''stinking fish''. The reserve was opened to the public in 2011, prior to which it was a disused quarry and was closed to the public. The main attraction to the wetlands is a large disused gravel quarry containing freshwater that seeps in through alluvial aquifers from The Cudgegong River. The quarry now functionas as an oxbow lake (billabong) wetland supporting a highly biodiverse wetland ecosystem. The fluctuating water level, periodic mudflats and abundance of snags and water plants contribute the vital habitat for a high diversity of waterbirds, frogs, fish and turtles
The Drip
The Drip Gorge is a significant place for the local Wiradjuri People. The best time to experience it is after a few days of rain, when you’ll see the sandstone walls dripping clear spring water. During a hot summer you’ll love its natural air-conditioning. It can be 10 to 15° cooler than the surrounding region on a hot day. It usually has a light fall of rain from water percolating through the rock.
This return track starts and ends at the carpark. Pack a picnic then take off on a bushwalk. If you’re not feeling energetic, rest in the shade on a seat along the track or dip your feet in the quiet rockpools.
The abundant plant life along the track adds to the beauty of The Drip. See if you can spot native apple gums, tree violets (named for their scent) and rocky outcrops with orchids and moss. After your walk, splash around in the Goulburn River or stop off at Hands on the Rock, an important Aboriginal rock art site at Ulan. It’s only 2km north of the Drip and well worth a visit.
